Salvage, rebuilt and flood titles: what title brands mean for a used car
A title is a car's legal record, and a title brand is a permanent note on it that something serious happened. Branded cars can sometimes be a fair deal, but only if you know what you are buying and the price reflects it.
Common brands
| Brand | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| Salvage | An insurer declared the car a total loss, or it was damaged beyond a set share of its value. It generally cannot be registered for road use until it is repaired and inspected. |
| Rebuilt or reconstructed | A salvage car that was repaired and passed an inspection so it can be driven again. |
| Flood | The car was damaged by water. |
| Junk or parts only | A car not intended to be put back on the road. |
| Lemon law buyback | A car the manufacturer had to buy back because of repeated, unfixed defects. |
| Odometer problem | The recorded mileage is not accurate, or is not actual. |
How a brand affects the car
- Value. Branded cars usually sell for substantially less than similar clean-title cars, and are harder to resell.
- Insurance. Some insurers will not cover them, or will limit coverage.
- Financing. Some lenders will not finance them.
- Safety and quality. Quality of repair varies widely. Hidden damage may not show for a long time.
Should you ever buy one?
Some buyers do, usually people who know cars well and are comfortable with the risk, and only at a price that reflects it. If you consider one, get an inspection by a mechanic who is experienced with rebuilt vehicles, ask for the repair records and photos of the damage before repair, and call your insurer to ask if they will cover it.
How to check a title
- Run a vehicle history report on the VIN. It will show brands recorded by states.
- For an extra check, use a provider approved by the federal National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.
- Look at the actual title: the brand is printed on it.
- Look for signs of flood damage: musty smell, silt in hidden spots, rust in unusual places, fogged lights.
- Ask the seller directly, and be wary of one who is vague.

Is a rebuilt title car safe?

Can I get insurance on a rebuilt title car?
